Free census workshops, "A Current View of Hawai‘i from Census Bureau Data," will be offered at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007 in Honolulu. The workshops will focus on how to access Hawaii data from the latest Census Bureau American Community Survey and the Local Employment Dynamics programs.
The training is co-sponsored by the Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism and the U.S. Census Bureau. "This training and the up-to-date information provided will help marketers, planners and other decision-makers to better analyze and understand the changing and mobile populations in the different regions of our state," said DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu. "It will be invaluable to anyone who uses census data."
Information Specialist Jerry Wong from the L.A. Regional Office of the Census Bureau will conduct the workshop. The American Community Survey includes detailed household information and was developed in response to the need for economic, social, demographic and housing data on a more frequent basis. The workshops are designed for individuals with some computer and census data knowledge.
Some new features the workshop will demonstrate are new geographic profiles, rankings and selected population profiles, such as of Native Hawaiians. Click here to see the American Community Survey data for Hawaii located on the DBEDT web site.
Participants will also get hands-on training in accessing data from the Local Employment Dynamics Program, a product of a partnership between the state and the Census Bureau that merges state wage records with other data to produce new information about jobs, workers, industries and the local economy.
The workshops are free and space is limited. To sign up for one of the two, three-hour workshop sessions contact Naomi Akamine at DBEDT, (808) 586-2486 or census@dbedt.hawaii.gov. Registration opens a half hour before each session. The workshops will be held at the Keoni Ana Building, 1177 Alakea St., Honolulu.
