Nonprofit network throws support behind GIVE Act

By Tim Delaney
President & CEO of National Council of Nonprofit Associations

Thank you to the great number of NCNA Policy News (and HANO Agenda) readers who acted on our GIVE Act Action Alert. The State Association network has generated almost 1,000 detailed letters to Congress in support of the GIVE Act, caused publication of dozens of newspaper opinion pieces and, most importantly, secured additional co-sponsors for the bill. But passage will require sustained efforts over the next weeks.

When the companion House bill to the GIVE Act is introduced soon, we will be calling on you to write to your Representatives asking them to co-sponsor the House bill and to push for quick passage of the needed reforms into law.

Several legislative alternatives have been introduced but some would continue to treat charitable volunteers as substandard. To help you stay on top of the key distinctions among the bills pending, we prepared the following overview.

As you review this chart, you can see that the GIVE Act which our nonprofit coalition has endorsed is comprehensive, fair, and passable. To read more about why the GIVE Act should be passed, see these articles, opinions and blogs: The Cohen Report, Philanthropy Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the Helena Independent Record, the New York Times, the Orlando Sentinel, a Minnesota Post blog, the North Carolina Herald Sun, the Boston Globe, the Marin Independent Journal and the Greenville News

For more information read the Background and "Why the GIVE Act matters," which includes stories and examples of how this bill is hurting charitable activities around the country.
