Girls Street Smart program reduces substance abuse

Family Programs Hawaii is again presenting Girls Street Smart for girls ages 12 to 18. Research has shown that after youth participate in Street Smart, they reduced their substance use.

Sessions will be in Waianae on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30 to 5 p.m., beginning Oct. 14 and running until Nov. 20. Girls do not have to be in foster care to participate. Core elements of the Girls Street Smart program include:

  • Enhancing affective and cognitive awareness, expression, and control

  • Teaching HIV/AIDS risk hierarchy and its personal application

  • Identifying personal triggers

  • Building skills in problem-solving and personal assertiveness.

Sponsors of the program series are the Exchange Club of Downtown Honolulu and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. Click here for more information and to register.
