UH offers graphic design
services for nonprofits

In 2008, the Graphic Design Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa initiated the Graphic Design Workshop – a special studio, run by advanced graphic design students supervised by with faculty and committed to providing high-quality, pro bono, graphic design work for Hawaii nonprofits.

The workshop has done the Hawaii Environmental Council’s annual report, public service campaigns for the Manoa Alcohol Project and a visual identity system for the Hawaii Nature Center. Its projects have already won local and national recognition for outstanding work in graphic design.

The workshop is now soliciting letters of interest from nonprofit organizations who have projects that need to be designed during the spring term, from January through May 2011. To propose a project, send a one-page, letter of interest with the information below to design@hawaii.edu by Nov. 30. Program faculty will review proposals and notify organizations with their decision by Dec. 10.

Letters of interest should include:

  • Name of nonprofit organization
  • Name of contact person
  • Mailing address, telephone number, email address and website URL
  • Short project description of one or two paragraphs
  • Budget for printing and production
  • Project deadline

The workshop provides professional graphic design services to nonprofit organizations at no charge, however, monetary gifts to support the Design Program are welcome. The nonprofit is responsible for all material, printing, and production costs.

The purpose of Graphic Design Workshop is to offer professional graphic design services to nonprofits and, at the same time, provide an educational experience for our advanced graphic design students. Therefore, it does not accept hypothetical projects. It is expected that all projects proposed will be done within the January-May 2011 semester. Only projects that are intended to be produced will be considered.
