One out of six Hawaii students attends a private school

Together, the 75 largest private, mostly nonprofit, schools have 34,322 students this fall, down about 1 percent from two years ago, according to Pacific Business News.

The state Department of Education estimates that there are 172,526 public-school students. Based on those numbers, approximately one in six Hawaii elementary and secondary students attends a private school.

Punahou School continues to hold the top spot as Hawaii’s largest and priciest private school, according to PBN, but, with three campuses, Kamehameha Schools educates more than one of every seven private school students in the state.
