The Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations will present its annual member meeting from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Pacific Club, 1451 Queen Emma St., Honolulu, featuring speaker Richard Klarberg, president and CEO of the Council on Accreditation.
“Nonprofit organizations have long been an essential thread in the fabric of American life,” Klarberg writes. “They are created and sustained by people who want to give of their time and resources to solve problems and enrich communities. Continuing this support, however, requires that the not-for-profit field earns and maintains the trust and confidence of the public.”
Thoughtful, well-enforced laws are an important part of sustaining that trust, but self-regulation is equally important, encouraging charitable organizations to embrace the highest possible standards of conduct, particularly in areas such as governance and financial management. At HANO’s Nov. 1 meeting, Klarberg will address this issue in his remarks, "Not-for-Profit Regulation: A Delicate Balance."
Klarberg has been president and CEO of COA since 2001. An attorney by training, he has had more than 30 years of nonprofit experience, specifically in the areas of establishing strong management protocols. He has served on numerous boards and was a member of a national task force on nonprofit self-regulation convened by the Independent Sector.
COA is a nonprofit that accredits more than 1,800 public and private human service organizations, serving more than 7 million vulnerable children and families each year. COA not only accredits the services provided by an agency but its governance and management, as well. COA was recently designated by the U.S. Department of State as the sole national accrediting body for intercountry adoption agencies.
There will also be a short business meeting to elect new members to the HANO Board. Save the date and watch for updates.
