A message from Kelvin Taketa, Hawai‘i Community Foundation:
As everyone knows by now, our state and national economies have hit some major turbulence, and it’s not over yet. As John Howell of Easter Seals said in a recent Honolulu Advertiser interview (8/19/08) when asked about fundraising in the current economy, “If you’re a nonprofit, or even if you’re a for-profit, if you’re making decisions now on how to run your business because times are difficult, you’re probably too late.”
And this is but one of the reasons why the Hawai‘i Community Foundation began this conference in 2003 to help local nonprofit board volunteers be more effective in their roles with nonprofit organizations. This year’s keynote speaker for the conference is Diana Aviv, president and chief executive officer of Independent Sector, a national coalition of nonprofit organizations, foundations and corporations. Diana was recently featured in Pacific Business News (August 22) and will share her vast knowledge of nonprofits in her keynote address, Emerging Trends and Challenges in the Nonprofit Sector, and which we think will likely be especially relevant in a year when nonprofit organizations are facing declining revenues and increasing challenges.
So, don’t miss out on this year’s conference – Oct. 1 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village – and if you need more information about this one-day conference, please visit our Web site or call us at (808) 566-5580. Space is limited and registrations are being accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.
