Congress is considering a myriad of healthcare reform proposals, several of which include tax credits for small businesses. Since tax-exempt nonprofits cannot benefit from tax credits, HANO’s national organization, the National Council of Nonprofits and its state association network are working for parity in healthcare benefits through subsidies for nonprofit small businesses, as are the Independent Sector and United Way.
NCN has also issued two new Special Reports in its series on the Economic Stimulus & Recovery. Special Report No. 8, “A Respectful Warning Call to Our Partners in Government: The Economic Crisis Is Unraveling the Social Safety Net Faster Than Most Realize,” highlights findings from independent national and state surveys that show demands for nonprofit services are increasing and their operating costs are rising while revenues are shrinking.
As Tim Delaney, NCN president and CEO said, “It is both unrealistic and unsafe to those depending on services to simply assume that nonprofits will somehow be able to continue to deliver more services that cost more with declining revenues. The math just doesn’t work.”
Special Report No. 9, “Strategies Being used by Nonprofit Leaders to Cope with the Nation’s Economic Crisis,” includes both sobering economic news and innovative strategies nonprofits across the country are using that can inspire new thinking about tackling financial challenges.
We don’t have to look far to find such inspiration. This month, we bring you a story about The Arc of Hilo’s meeting its mission and diversifying its funding through innovation and entrepreneurship.
