To prepare for “what is expected to be a very challenging legislative session,” Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland and Representative John Mizuno have invited “advocates, professionals, parents, students, policymakers and anyone interested in improving the well-being of Hawaii’s children and youth” to “Youth Voices for a Bright Future,” its 17th annual Children and Youth Summit. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Washington Place in Honolulu.
The purpose of the summit is to define issues and set action priorities for the 2011 legislative session. Panel members will discuss the economy, education, environment, health and human services and national and international issues. Small group discussions will be held following those presentations and, after lunch, attendees will vote to determine recommendations to the Keiki Caucus and Legislature.
Afternoon presentations by U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka, Robbie Alm of Hawaiian Electric Co. and Kathryn Matayoshi, interim superintendent of schools are tentatively planned. Follow-up sessions will be scheduled.
Registration will be first-come-first-served and limited to 150; lunch will be provided. For more information and to obtain a registration form, call (808) 586-6130 or (808) 586-6050 or email a.takabayashi@capitol.hawaii.gov. Deadline to register is Oct. 5.
