Board Alive! Best Practices for Nonprofit Board Governance Training in Hilo

Presented in partnership with the County of Hawaiʻi, Department of Research and Development

Effective board governance is critical to ensuring that a nonprofit organization delivers on its mission, manages its resources effectively, and maintains its reputation. This half-day workshop will provide board members and executives with tools to help them become more engaged and informed and to fully understand the commitment of serving on a nonprofit board.

This training will cover:

  • The Nonprofit Sector Context
  • Essential Board Functions
  • Core Legal & Financial Responsibilities of the Board and Risk Management Strategies
  • Dynamic Teamwork: The Board/Staff Relationship
  • How to Build a Strong Board
  • Creating Organizational Quality (Assessment and Planning)
  • Resources for Boards and Organizations

All participants will take home a binder of materials and resources.

About the Presenter:

Jennifer Cornish Creed has over 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. She has been with the Hawaiʻi Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations (HANO), the state association of nonprofits in Hawaiʻi, for 12 years, and with its predecessor organization, the Hawaiʻi Community Services Council for 6 years. She is currently Director of Professional Development at HANO and also serves as the Director of the Weinberg Fellows program, a management program that builds the capacity of Executive Directors of nonprofits that serve the neediest in our community. Jennifer’s areas of training and consulting expertise include board governance, nonprofit management, outcomes, proposal writing and planning facilitation. In 2014, Jennifer designed and piloted the first Hawaiʻi Nonprofit Board Leadership Institute – a training program for individuals seeking to join a nonprofit board or new to a nonprofit board. Jennifer has additional training in Collaborative Leadership, Facilitating Strategic Thinking and Planning and Appreciative Inquiry and is a certified MBTI® (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) practitioner.

Cost:

  • HANO member rate: $15 – HANO members must log-in to receive the member rate
  • Non-member rate: $25

Thanks to our partnership with the County of Hawaiʻi and a generous local foundation that wishes to remain anonymous, we are able to offer this training at a highly subsidized rate.
