What is Strategic Planning?

A strategic plan is a roadmap that highlights the most strategic issues for an organization to address in the next 3-5 years to move its mission forward. It can do the following things for your organization:

  • Help create a foundation for common understanding and strengthen relationships between board and staff
  • Help you to envision your organization’s preferred future, but anchor it in enough reality to be achievable
  • Create synergy, new energy that would not have existed without the opportunity to step back and perceive new ways to work and grow together

When is it a good time to do strategic planning?

  • When the organization is in a relatively stable state and can afford to look towards the future (i.e., not in the midst of an immediate crisis). It is also critical to know that board and staff are willing to commit the time, money and effort to both planning and implementing the plan.

How long in advance should I contact a facilitator about Strategic Planning services?

If done well, a strategic planning is a process that takes time to prepare for. Activities
that you should anticipate time for before the planning retreat are:

  • Securing funding for the planning process
  • Collecting and analyzing data from your key stakeholders: Determining whose voices should be represented when we make critical decisions on behalf of the organization and how to authentically hear from our partners in community and those who experience our services or places
  • Preparing information to share at the beginning of the planning session that will provide context for decision-makers: Key stakeholder data, assessing major trends that are impacting/or that will impact the organization in the near future, and the state of your organization – high level programmatic and operational highlights
